Benefits of Having Synthetic Turf

Benefits of Having Synthetic Turf

For a long time, sports fans and players were the only ones who saw the benefits of synthetic turf. Thankfully, more and more people are recognizing the benefits and ditching their natural grass for the artificial kind. The truth is, natural grass just can’t remain lush and resilient if walked on more than 3-4 days each week, let alone if it isn’t getting watered and maintained regularly. If this isn’t enough to sway you, maybe we can change your mind with the fact that some artificial turf looks so good it can fool you into thinking it’s natural. Here are some of the many benefits of having synthetic turf instead of a natural lawn in your front or back yard.

Reduce Your Water Usage.

Unlike sod or natural grasses, synthetic turf requires zero water to keep it looking its best. A typical lawn requires up to 56,000 gallons of water for maintenance each year! While San Diego is not currently experiencing a drought, residents should always be looking for opportunities to reduce water use. By switching North American schools, parks and professional sports stadiums from natural grass to artificial turf, more than 2.2 billion gallons of water was saved in 2008. Eliminates the Use of Dangerous Pesticides and Fertilizers.

The EPA has identified runoff of toxic pesticides and fertilizers as a principal cause of water pollution. In Florida alone, the EPA estimates that about 1,000 miles of rivers and streams, 350,000 acres of lakes and 900 square miles of estuaries are impaired by runoff of pesticides and fertilizers. By installing synthetic turf, the need for nearly a billion pounds of harmful pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides and herbicides which are used to maintain grass is eliminated. Not only is this amazing for the environment, but when you think about your children and pets playing in your yard filled with these dangerous chemicals, hopefully you can see the benefits to your family as well.

 Less Maintenance.

Real, natural lawns take hours of maintenance each week. Not only do they need to be watered daily, but they also need to be mowed, weeded, fertilized, and aerated regularly to keep them looking their best. In San Diego’s dry months, expect your water bill to go up because you will be watering your lawn even more. Sorry to break it to you though – even with regular maintenance, your natural lawn just can’t stay perfectly green in our dry, southern California climate. That’s the unfortunate truth.

It’s Always Green.

We get our share of dry months here in San Diego, and they take a toll on natural grass. Thankfully, synthetic turf is always green and looking fresh – you won’t ever have any dry, dead areas that need extra love and time to grow in and look green again. Today artificial turf is available in all sorts of blade lengths, colors and textures, that it is easy to fool most people into thinking your lawn is natural. You can even get variegated strands that look just like the real thing.

Save Money.

While the initial cost of installing synthetic turf can give some people sticker shock, it pays for itself quickly since it lasts upwards of 25 years. Not only do you save money by reducing your water usage, thus your water bill going down, but you also save money by not having to maintain synthetic turf. Once it’s down, you don’t need to invest in its care like you would natural grass. Think watering, fertilizing, mowing, picking weeds, using pesticides, and aerating – you don’t need to do any of that with synthetic turf. Lay it down and brush it off every so often to remove debris – no need to pay the gardener to mow and take care of your lawn every week. If you have pets, you should wash off your turf once a week to keep it sanitary – compare that quick wash off to daily watering and the money you save adds up quickly. Many cities even offer rebates for people who make sustainable choices and cut down their water-usage; read more on our blog.

 Better for Playing.

If you have an active family who loves spending time outdoors and playing in the yard, synthetic turf is perfect for you! Not only do soccer balls bounce better on turf, but there is never mud being tracked inside your house, no nasty critters digging and eating your grass, and no itchy skin from grass allergies. To keep your family active and healthy, installing synthetic turf is the way to go.
