Project Spotlight: Hawthorne Street Transformation in South Park

Project Spotlight: Hawthorne Street Transformation in South Park

You may remember the  complex outdoor living space remodel we completed this Summer in South Park. This time, we’ve done it again! Just a stone’s throw away from this project is another home, nestled in a quiet canyon, that was plagued by multi-leveled topography. This home had very little usable outdoor living space and the homeowners were at their wits end trying to find a contractor that could transform their backyard into what it is now.

Here are two of the first visualizations we created for this project. These are not drawn to scale, but it gave the client a very clear image of their future backyard.

As you can see, this job required extensive concrete work to create usable space out of the mixed elevations. We built 3 concrete layers, each 15 feet wide, to provide adequate entertaining space. What we loved about this custom design was that we routed the staircases through the tiers, adding interesting dimension versus just installing a staircase straight down to the base floor. In total, our efforts created approximately 1,200 square feet of outdoor entertaining space (not including the synthetic turf)!

We lined the staircases and “tiers” with these timeless black metal railings and often use them in our projects because of the modern edge, clean lines, and structure they provide. Our clients love the look and feel of this signature design element.

As you walk down each flight, you’ll see several upgrades that were custom built for the client. We added a custom bocce ball court with true oyster shell powder, taking no shortcuts when it comes to luxury. Our team designed and installed custom concrete countertops surrounding a state-of-the-art stainless steel BBQ, a custom-made, poured-in-place fire pit (which was a design decision made so that it would match the rest of the space perfectly), and installed well lights throughout the property.

On the lowest level, we installed synthetic turf for a truly low-maintenance and eco-friendly backyard. We built the planter boxes pictured below, as well as installed irrigation for fruit trees. We collaborated with one of our favorite local businesses in San Diego, Urban Plantations to install the lime, stone fruit, lemon, and avocado trees. They are an incredible organization based in North Park, and we were thrilled to be able to partner with them to add these additional features to the home. Be sure to visit their website for a full glimpse of their services and blog.

“We didn’t know anyone else that could pull this off,” said homeowners Kent and Priscilla. Knowing that we exceeded their expectations by transforming their previously unusable backyard into what it is now, is yet another reminder why we love doing what we do.
